Western North Carolina's hottest young bluegrass band the Steep Canyon Rangers are selling out shows from the mountains to the coast of North Carolina. They appear regularly at a variety of venues throughout the Southeast, including The Cat's Cradle (NC), The Prism (VA), Proud Larry's (MS), the Art Center (NC), and the Red Light Cafe (GA). The Rangers have also shared their music as far west as Colorado in places such as Aspen, Boulder, and Durango. They have performed with nationally known acts such as Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Peter Rowan, Norman Blake, and Donna the Buffalo. In 2002 the band will share the stage with Jimmy Martin, Doc Watson, and IIIrd Tyme Out.

Their festival history is young but includes the Brushy Mountain Jamboree (Smilefest) in Union Grove, NC, WDVX's Camp and Jam Bluegrass Festival in Clinton, TN, the Eno River Festival in Durham, NC, the Boxcar Pinion Bluegrass Festival in Chattanooga, TN, Bluegrass Under the Elm in Carrboro, NC and the Doc Watson Festival in Cove Creek, NC.

In the summer of 2001 the Steep Canyon Rangers spent three weeks in Colorado sharing their music with new audiences. This North Carolina band was embraced by Colorado's acoustic music revival and the successes of their tour include live studio performances on high profile radio stations such KGNU-Boulder and KSUT-Four Corners as well as an expanding fan base stretching from Lyons to Durango. The highlight of the trip was their big win at the Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Festival band competition. This win earned the band a main stage performance for 'Rockygrass' 2002.

Recently, the Steep Canyon Rangers were named 'The Best New Artist of 2001' by the Prism, located in Charlottesville, VA earning a rare return appearance for the same season. The bandıs success is directly centered on their energetic live performances where they play standard bluegrass numbers as well as solid original material and they tour extensively. This bluegrass band has captured a uniquely diverse fan base, especially across North Carolina, through appearing regularly at a wide variety of venues. They go from selling out theater 'family style' settings such as the Art Center in Carrboro, NC to packing late-night clubs such as the Pour House in Raleigh, NC. The Rangers have received attention for successfully tapping into both the traditional bluegrass circuits as well as the broad based 'club scenes' in the Triangle and Western North Carolina.

The Rangers recorded their first album Old Dreams and New Dreams in the winter of 2001 in Barren County, Kentucky. Produced by founding member of Newgrass Revival, Curtis Burch, the album sold over 4,000 copies, and it can be heard on over 900 radio stations nationwide, including WNCW's 'Going Across the Mountain' bluegrass radio show in Spindale, NC. In May 2002, the Rangers finished their second album, Mr. Taylor's New Home, due to release in July on Bonfire Records. Recorded in Jerry Brown's 'Rubber Room Studio' in Chapel Hill, NC, the album features ten originals as well as a few bluegrass favorites. The Steep Canyon Rangers is comprised of musicians from every region of North Carolina. Three members of the band are from the mountains of western North Carolina. On fiddle and vocals from Fairview is Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Hamilton. From Brevard is Woody Platt on guitar and lead vocals and Mike Guggino on the mandolin and vocals. Graham Sharp plays the banjo, sings, and is originally from Greensboro, NC. Bassist and vocalist Charles Humphrey III hails from Greenville, NC. The band was started four years ago where the group met while attending the University of North Carolina. Playing both original and traditional material, the age of the band ranges from 21 to 25 years old giving the band a 'youthful take on the bluegrass and old-time music genre'.
