Your YouTube Guid to Nick Lowe
He's been called many things: The Father of Pub Rock, The Jesus of Cool, Basher. And thanks to YouTube, we can get a glimpse of Nick Lowe in many - but certainly not all - of his incarnations. As his new album At My Age proves, Nick Lowe's never sounded or looked better. But a tour of his back pages is still a lot of fun. So click away, and enjoy some very special Nick Lowe TV moments.
Brinsley Schwarz - "Surrender To The Rhythm" A rollicking performance of what many consider to be the Brinsleys' signature song, from beloved UK TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test, circa 1973. Nick rocks the Telecaster, (and an unforgettable haircut) in this clip. Nick Lowe - "Endless Sleep" A stark, cutting, mostly solo performance from the legendary Stiff's Live Stiffs UK tour in 1977. Sharp-eyed viewers will recognize the gentleman in the glasses standing stage left. Nick Lowe - "Cruel To Be Kind" A fantastic 1979 performance (even if it was lip synched) from Top of the Pops. Excitable host David "Kid" Jensen informs us that Nick's new single "Cruel to Be Kind" is "rocketing up the US charts." Nick looks sharp in his bolo tie, and sounds even sharper. Rockpile - "Teacher Teacher" Nick takes lead vocals on this, the first track from Rockpile's classic 1980 LP, Seconds of Pleasure. Interestingly, he would revisit the garage mechanic theme again a decade later with Little Village in the video for "She Runs Hot." BONUS!!! Bay City Rollers - "We Love You" An earnest fan used this not-so-earnest song written and recorded by Nick (under the moniker The Tartan Horde) as the music bed for a loving tribute to everyone's favorite plaid lads. |
