Performing Songwriter Reviews Patrick Davis' "Chances Are" in the November 2003 Issue
This notable debut from South Carolina roots singer-songwriter Patrick Davis showcases a young artist on the cusp of a serious career. Produced by Mark
Bryan (Hootie & the Blowfish) and played with committed strength, Chances Are is a natural blend of Springsteen-style working-class rock and from-the-gut alternative country. Davis¹ writing is reminiscent of the aforementioned Springsteen in his early years‹wrought with economy but managing to pack image after image into each spare line. This record is thoroughly drenched in the South and alternately calls to mind Steve Earle, Anodyne-era Uncle Tupelo and Bobby Bare (Sr., that is). Equally at home in ballads and shuffling rockers, Davis is a self-possessed writer and performer. If this is his first record, we can¹t wait to hear what he'll be doing a few years from now.
