San Jose Mercury News pick for Los Straitjackets
Nashville's Los Straitjackets are one of the finest instrumental rock 'n' roll bands around, but as their name and their colorful lucha libre masks suggest, they also love Mexican culture. So their new Rock en Espanol Vol. 1, produced by Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, is a perfect fit. The bulk of the album consists of Spanish translations of '60s rock 'n' roll classics, some literal ("All Day and All of the Night" becomes "De Dia y de Noche"), some wildly reinvented ("Dizzy Miss Lizzy" becomes "El Microscopico Bikini"), with vocals from Big Sandy, Rosas and Little Willie G. of Thee Midniters.
