Sloan Nominated for a Juno Award
It's 2007 and Sloan are still kicking out the rock, still making the rounds, still generally being awesome and even claiming to have a "49-per cent share in Chart magazine stock." In between all this rocking and investing, they put out a new album called Never Hear The End Of It and, fittingly, they've been nominated for rock group of the year at the 2007 Juno Awards.
ChartAttack chatted with two members of the band (Chris Murphy and Patrick Pentland... OK, Jay Ferguson was there too, but he's the strong silent type) at Tuesday's Juno nominees' media conference in Toronto: ChartAttack: We're sick of the whole Canadian modesty thing - can you give us some blatant self-promotion to justify your nomination? Chris Murphy: Well, we can be modest, but you don't want us to be at this juncture, so we can do that, too. We're the coolest band… Patrick Pentland: Hopefully, you're warming into this. CM: Yeah, I am. We're totally the coolest band. Who are we up against again? PP: The new Headstones? CM: Hugh Dillon's pretty cool. But seriously, do you have a list of the nominees? I think Billy Talent's in there somewhere. CM: Billy Talent? We could kick their ass. PP: See, they're the new Headstones. CM: Oh, I get it now. You get that joke? There was this movie called Hard Core Logo, and Hugh Dillon from the Headstones played a character called Billy Tallent. See, I'm stating this for the readers, because I don't know how many of them will get the reference. Who's the first person you'd call if you won? CM: You're not going to be there, are you? I'll call you. I'll call the office at Chart. Or else I'll call my girlfriend because I'll be excited about it. I don't think we're gonna win, but it's great that we were even nominated. We were nominated for our first Juno in 1994, right? PP: Yeah, for best alternative band. CM: We lost it to The Rose Chronicles, and you haven't heard the last from them. PP: We made up for it when we won the next year, though. We beat out Moist. CM: You could say they "pushed just a little too late." Nelly Furtado is hosting. Do you think she's actually evil enough to eat a man if she had the opportunity? CM: She could eat this man. [laughs] I've met Nelly Furtado several times, and everybody's heard the story that I discovered her. We played with her ages ago, and I didn't talk to her or hang out with her at all, but I did get this kind of wave from her. PP: It was a vibe. CM: You could say that - a vibe. And after that, she was at #1 on the charts. Then the vibe sort of went away and she went down, but now she's back up there again. So Sloan is responsible for the success of Nelly Furtado? CM: Or occasional lack thereof. -Caitlin Hotchkiss |
