REVIEW OF CMJ SHOW!

"Jason Darling at
The Living Room"

By David Chiu:

Jason Darling is not a household name yet. He has a whispery but expressive singing voice, and his plugged in acoustic guitar playing shimmers. The few that were privileged to seem him live during his show at The Living Room as part of the CMJ festival witnessed a very intimate, powerful performance. Accompanied by only a keyboard player who provided the sonic textures and drumbeats, Darling played songs from his most recent album Night Like My Head. His style is driving folk pop with an ethereal nature, evident from a set list of songs including the album title track, "Angels Down," "Dinner Song," and "Computers Make the Music." The mood of his songs conveys a sense of loneliness and detachment of real life in a clear and poignant way. Darling represents the typical down and out New York troubadour of today-a good musician and a fine storyteller.
