Montreal's The High Dials have won some notable fans since their 2003 debut. Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre declares them "the best band in North America," and routinely turns up at gigs to say so, hopping onstage to join in their songs. As a result, the band wound up supporting BJM on a recent sold-out tour of the UK. Andrew Loog Oldham, original 60s hustler and starmaker to the Rolling Stones, also routinely lists The High Dials as a favorite band, and flew in unannounced to a Vancouver gig to catch their set. Little Steven has been their most public champion, slotting them in to perform with the Strokes and the Stooges at his festival on Randalls Island, NY, as well as featuring them regularly on his Underground Garage radio show. Neko Case personally sought them out to support her on her tour of North America last summer, after their appearance at SXSW in 2006. The High Dials have released two records: A New Devotion (2003), an out-and-out concept record with 12-string guitars, synths, 3-part harmonies, and a science-fiction tale of paranoia at its dark heart. Part S.F. Sorrow, part Flaming Lips, part Logan's Run, War of the Wakening Phantoms (2005) was their lush, transcendent follow-up, full of the magic and melancholy of some lost world. It made the year-end top-ten list of many critics, including the Washington Post and Magnet magazine, and won high praise in the UK press. The album went to number one on Canadian college radio charts after its release there. The opening track from this album, "The Holy Ground," is currently featured on a national TV ad campaign for Rogers Wireless in Canada. Standard Jewel Case.
