A less world-weary version of Mogwai; a more concise Godspeed You Black Emperor!; a Sigur Rós you could dance to. As much as dropping names like these sets what I consider an impossibly high standard, there are obvious parallels to be drawn between the aforementioned genre-definers and Saxon Shore, an East Coast aggregate who bring a shimmering, often sublime quality to their guitar-centric instrumentals. Their new long-player delivers all the epic-feeling, tension-and-release dynamics one could ask for, and works ‘em around the kind of delightfully pert melodic progressions even the pop kids could dig.
