Meanflower
Meanflower was formed late one muddy night in August, 2000 at the Galax Fiddler’s Convention in Galax, VA. Soon after that, the band began to make a full-time go of it touring across Virginia and North Carolina in a beat up RV called the Lazy Daze.
Singer/ songwriter Dave McCormack began writing down what would now become 2003’s first great independent release, “...a distant episode”. The band’s early bluegrass beginnings took on a contemporary twang/alt country sound, and way back in March 2001, Meanflower took 10 new songs to their sparse studio attic and put the stuff to tape. The self-released, “Postmark New Mexico” was the result. Full of moving, straightforward lyrics and stirring harmonies, the songs quickly earned the band a loyal Southeastern regional fan-base and the praise of critics on both coasts.
With “… a distant episode”, the band teamed up with producer and musician Peter Griesar (who co-wrote a Grammy Award winning song while with the Dave Matthews Band, Lauren Hoffman) and engineer Rod Coles (Hackensaw Boys, Carter Beauford) to fullfill their bleary-eyed vision. Joining them in the studio, 20 year-old guitarist wunderkind Chris Eldridge (Seldom Scene) lent his talents to the recording. The result, Meanflower’s debut album---inspired songwriting, superior production with a well crafted original sound that leaves you pining for more….
“. . .more than a little magic . . . that good kind of melancholy that makes you realize how lucky you are to still be alive and relatively intact . . .” —Richmond Times-Dispatch
“An intelligent weariness that's as comfortable on the Left Bank as in the New American South.” Walter Salas-Humara of The Silos
“It's that moving, that engaging; it really is music for any time or place.”
