Giant Sand's Howe Gelb discovers lost track

Experimental americana pioneer Howe Gelb discovers lost song "Belly Full of Fire" and makes last minute alterations to new Giant Sand album proVisions.

When you're as prolific as Howe Gelb it's easy to lose track of your material. To the legendary indie vet, songs are cyclical - coming and going, bleeding into one another like rain on a river.

Written - or more accurately, birthed - while on tour opening for PJ Harvey in Europe, "Belly Full of Fire" was first the victim of a spilled bottle of wine in a Stockholm recording studio. Later the song fell into the creative abyss which can swallow songs whole when writing and recording at the voracious pace Gelb finds comfortable. "As is the case these days so much gets recorded and then stashed away until it’s needed ... some stuff just gets forgotten about and this was one of those songs," said Gelb on the phone from an undisclosed European location.

The track finally resurfaced while going through music from Gelb's vast library in search of bonus material for proVisions.

"Somehow it made sense there at the very last minute to get this new found treasure of a song in the record. It made the whole record click. It woke up the songs that came after it beautifully."

"Plus, it was written while on tour with P.J. and the man who discovered her, John Parish, who is a dear friend, said he loved the track too. I reckon it was enough of an omen for me to gush, 'Oh man ... this has gotta happen.' Even though the promo copies were already pressed up and deadlines were lining up to die."

Gelb has now inserted "Belly Full of Fire" into its rightful place on proVisions in lieu of the lovely, rambling "The New Romance of Falling" which will now be offered as a digital-only bonus track with purchase of proVisions.
