The Mammals

"The Mammals play old-time stringband music the way Jack Kerouac wrote novels - with an abandon born of a deep understanding of structure and form. Their sound is wild, mirthful, and masterful." - Scott Alarik, Boston Globe

"The future of music is in good hands. Folk music is alive and well!" - Paul Elisha, WAMC Northeast Public Radio

"Raw, driving strings and smooth harmonies that are contagious, powerful and kick-ass." - Sharon Nichols, Woodstock Times

A new generation of roots music lovers, including many recently converted "O Brother Where Art Thou?" fans, are unearthing the common threads that connect indie-rock Americana acts, dyed-in-the-wool bluegrass bands, and banjo-toting singer/songwriters, discovering a somewhat-evolved "folk music" of today. At one time it was all simply called "music" and it was as varied and multicolored as the "folks" who played it. Slowly, through years of subdivision and niche marketing, consumers and musicians alike have been encouraged to identify loyally with a specific style. Now, as these outdated dividing lines are beginning to blur again, a new worldwide appreciation of folk-influenced music is taking hold, and savvy, young listeners don't mind scouring the pop/rock, folk, country, blues, world, and soundtrack CD bins at their local record store to find it.

Enter The Mammals. Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, grandson of the legendary Pete Seeger, has teamed up with Michael Merenda, art-pop songwriter, and Ruth Ungar, daughter of Grammy award winning fiddler/composer, Jay Ungar. Blending the textures of their varied instruments, repertoires, and influences, the trio is spreading their motto "TRAD IS RAD" across the nation. In a constantly evolving genre, The Mammals create a strongly grounded acoustic sound that is beautiful, energized, and raw - preserving the timeless appeal of American roots music.
