MOJO gives the Sadies' "New Seasons" four stars

New studio album from the Toronto psych-cowboys.

It's been three years since their previous lauded studio album, Favorite Colours, but they've hardly been sitting on their laurels. Since then they've put out a star-packed double live album (In Concert Vol. 1) and an all-instrumental film soundtrack (Tales Of The Rat Fink). Those between-studio-album releases jointly reflect what the Canadian quartet has been best known for: playing instrumentals. However, like kindred spirits Calexico, their studio albums have been moving away from virtuoso instrumentals (there's just two and a half on New Seasons) towards vocal songs, of which this album has some excellent examples. Highlights: country rocker "Last Inquisition," cowboy twanger "The Trial," Byrdsish "Sunset To Dawn "and Byrds-via-Jayhawks "What's Left Behind," all featuring excellent dual vocals and guitars from brothers Dallas and Travis Good.
