Juliana Hatfield to release Made In China on own imprint "Ye Olde Records"
For Immediate Release June 15, 2005
YE OLDE RECORDS TO RELEASE JULIANA HATFIELD’S MADE IN CHINA AUGUST 9 “Along the way, Hatfield…has become a bona fide guitar god, an almost-rock star, and one of the most appealing, unpretentious musicians…”—Boston Globe The latest album from ground-breaking and genre-defining artist Juliana Hatfield will be in stores August 9. On Made In China, Hatfield mixes raw guitars with confessional lyrics to create the first solo CD for her new label, Ye Olde Records. Made In China presents a full realization of Hatfield’s approach to music: writing the majority of the songs, self-producing the album and putting it out on her own label. As Hatfield says about making the album, “Now that I have my own label, I can do whatever I want. This album sounds like me, to me. I wanted to make an album quick and raw, without too much agonizing or conscious thought.” The album was recorded at the Windham in Bellows Falls, VT and at Camp Street Studios in Boston. Made In China was mixed by Brian Brown and Paul Kolderie and mastered by Greg Calbi. Hatfield is joined on the album by Joe Keefe (guitars), Ben Smith (bass) and Sebastian Keefe (drums). John Doe of X writes of the new album, “A frighteningly dark and beautiful record filled with stark, angular, truly brutal songs and guitars. This is surely a ‘Woman Under the Influence,’ though I’m not sure of what.” Juliana Hatfield is a noted and influential female voice in the world of rock music. She began her career in the Blake Babies, joined The Lemonheads to play bass on the alt-rock favorite It’s a Shame About Ray and then moved into her own solo career. Beginning with 1992’s Hey Babe, Hatfield has produced a series of critically-acclaimed albums. In 1992, Hatfield formed the Juliana Hatfield Three with bassist Dean Fisher and drummer Todd Phillips and released Become What You Are that spawned the hits “My Sister” and “Spin the Bottle” (included on the soundtrack to Reality Bites). Other albums include Only Everything, Bed, Beautiful Creature and Total System Failure. Her most recent solo album, In Exile Deo, enchanted critics: Jon Pareles of The New York Times featured the album in his “The Year’s Best Pop Albums” for 2004 saying “…so precisely realized: from melody to aphoristic lyrics, from her clear but wary voice to arrangements that support and claw just where they should.” The Boston Globe wrote of the album, “smart, brash and beautiful—and arguably the strongest collection of her career.” Juliana opens her U.S. tour on the August 9th release date with a show at The Windham in Bellows Falls, VT, where she recorded most of the album.
