Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the TrueLoves triumphed. Reed’s impressively gritty white boy take on classic, warm-toned soul in the tradition of artists Sam Cooke and Wilson Pickett was revelatory, and nothing was lost in translation between his usual nightclub setting and the Pavilion’s larger stage. As Reed led his band - including a three-piece horn section - through tunes such as the shuffling “Take My Love With You,” “It’s Easier” and the single “Dissatisfied” off his recently released CD, “Roll With You,” the only thing clearly missing was an enthused audience.
