Born Ruffians
In an age where young bands sound fresh out of the studio instead of fresh out of the garage it’s refreshing to hear a pack of lads who don’t shy away from freaking out a little bit. Maybe it’s the crisp Canadian air or maybe it’s (gasp) actual inspiration, but the Born Ruffians have that ever elusive, impossible-to-put-your-finger-on magic factor. That combination of impeccable songs and drunken youthful swagger that makes your favorite rock records sit themselves comfortably in your brain and refuse to get out.
In 2002, young Luke Lalonde, Mitch DeRosier and Steve Hamelin huddled up backstage to play the first Born Ruffians shows and since then have built a small yet fanatic following in and around their native Ontario. Since then the size and intensity of their ram-packed live shows has grown exponentially leading to them finding the ever-mindful ears of Warp Records.
The broken shards of jagged pop that make up their debut EP simultaneously call to mind the seemingly disparate feelings of searching for love and searching for the beer at an especially raucous house party. A frenzied tenderness underlies the music, which sways from stuttering spaz rock to dislocated torch songs.
