MOJO reviews The Cake Sale

Here's one they baked earlier. All proceeds go to Oxfam.

Specially-recorded in aid of Oxfam's Make Trade Fair Campaign, this is already double platinum in Ireland, where it was first released last November.Pooling the talents of 30 musicians in writing and/or performance mode, it's the brainchild of Brian Crosby of Irish band Bell X1, his vision of an "authentic" charity album wherein the songs work en masse fully realised. Bigger names includ Crowded House's Nick Seymour, bassist in Crosby's able house band, and The Cardigans' Nina Persson, who is quietly commanding on the Lennonesque piano ballad "Black Winged Bird." At root, we're talking fairly traditional singer-songwriter fare, contributions from the likes of Josh Ritter, Neil Hannon and sometime Damien Rice foil Lisa Hannigan adding to the impression of a particularly fruitful/philanthropic opening-mike night. But no heckling: all publishing royalties go to the aforementioned charity.
