An album as concept heavy as Rock Plaza Central's excellent Are We Not Horses? demands a video as concept heavy as this clip for "I Am an Excellent Steel Horse", produced by the Humble Empire. Mike Juneau's camera ambles around a suitably rustic barn, focusing on banks of televisions arranged in vaguely human and equine shapes as they broadcast composite images of horses and men. Startling in its simplicity-- it's just two long shots-- the video might seem like a heady art installation, blurring the distinctions between human and animal. Yet, it comes across as pensive and moody rather than cerebral and distant, thanks as much to Juneau's patient camerawork as to the song itself, which sound like passionate testimony from a road-toughened horse declaring his own unlikely humanity.
