The latest outing from Juliana Hatfield picks up the tempo and turns up the volume but retains Juliana’s steely commitment to stark instrumentation and impenitent lyrics. “Made In China,” her first CD on her own label, Ye Olde Records, is an artist’s dream; Juliana notes, “Now that I have my own label, I can do whatever I want. This album sounds like me to me. I wanted to make an album quick and raw, without too much agonizing or conscious thought. ” And she has. The album was recorded at the Windham in Bellows Falls, VT, which is the new home of longtime Hatfield affiliates, Fort Apache Studios. Hatfield is joined on “Made In China” by Joe Keefe (guitars), Ben Smith (bass) and Sebastian Keefe (drums). John Doe, formerly of X, writes of the new album, “A frighteningly dark and beautiful record filled with stark, angular, truly brutal songs and guitars. This is surely a ‘Woman Under The Influence’, though I’m not sure of what.” Critical accolades and a rabid fan base have fueled Juliana’s career thus far. Her last album, “In Exile Deo,” found its way onto a New York Times Top Ten list where Times’ writer John Pareles puts his finger on the genius of Juliana Hatfield, writing, “There’s nothing structurally radical about Juliana Hatfield’s latest batch of rock songs about lust, addiction, loneliness, and betrayal. It’s just that each one is so precisely realized; from melody to aphoristic lyrics, from her clear but wary voice to arrangements that support and claw just where they should." Standard Jewel Case.
