Robert Gomez

Robert Gomez was born in South Texas and began guitar studies at age 6. While in high school he won performance competitions statewide in jazz and classical guitar and at age 17 began music studies at the University of North Texas. After working as a jazz guitarist throughout his college years, Robert started the band Rob G and the Latin Pimps, with whom he released "El Borracho" on the Denton, Texas based independent label Ffroe Records. It was with the Latin Pimps that he won both a Dallas Observer (1999) and FW weekly Music Award (1999). Soon after the release of "El Borracho" Robert moved to New York City, and in 2000, he recorded the self-released "Robert Gomez Trio", which featured all original compositions highlighted by a unique approach to jazz guitar. "Robert Gomez Trio" won acclaim in Jazztimes, Cadence, and Acoustic Guitar Magazine; that last publication lauded, "This is an innovative debut CD by an extraordinary young player." During his time in New York, Robert began studying with masters such as Fred Hand, principal guitarist for the Metropolitan Opera, and tres guitar master Nelson Gonzalez, with whom he would later record. It was also at this time that Robert and his colleagues, including Zack Hexum (Trauma Records), formed the short-lived progressive rock experiment Overground (aka'Qedrowan'). Overground's first and only album, "What Happens Now," was produced by 311's Nick Hexum. After a short-lived tour, the group mercifully disbanded due to artistic differences. Soon, Robert began playing and recording with a cornucopia of musicians from all over the world including Nelson Gonzalez, Brazilian singer/songwriter Tico Da Costa, and Turkish sensation Omar Faruk Tekbilek (Narada), with whom he still performs. He also started collaborating with composer/ producer Oliver Glissant (Black Salt Productions). Under Glissant's direction, Robert began work on what was to become a culmination of all his musical experiences thus far. Titled "Etherville" (Basement Front Records), this album, slated for a July 12th release, is a haunting and beautiful set of songs with an amazing collection of musicians from his working band and includes a few notable guest appearances such as Centro-matic's Matt Pence and Norah Jones.
