There's Something About Greg Summerlin

So Birmingham, Alabama puts out another solid record. Is there a trend starting here? To be able to make post about bands from our hometown makes us proud. Greg’s second solo effort since the split of The Quinsonics is what I would call a sleeper hit if you were to compare it to movies. This isn’t Mission Impossible 3; this is more like There’s Something About Mary. The comparison works perfectly, because this is a perfect summer record (it sounds like it was written over the past summer) and “The Young Meteors” probably will not come barreling out of the gate opening week like a summer blockbuster with big numbers and huge hits, no Tom Cruise to be found here. What this record will do is grow on you like There's Something about Mary grew, and grew to become the sleeper hit of the year whatever year that was that it came out. It is also appropriate that this record comes out the same week as the Paul Westerberg Best Of- “Besterberg”, because "The Young Meteors" reminds us of the past two Westerberg records, in the way that Paul just doesn’t care what we think anymore. Westerberg probably never did, but his past two records are really show Westerberg making recrods that he is happy with, no longer worried with impressing anyone. Greg Summerlin's new record has that same vibe, this was a record written for him, and we get a little taste of a period of his songwriting life. Greg’s voice and songwriting style remind us a lot of Westerberg, Tommy Keene, with traces of New Order, and even a little Joe Strummer. Our favorite songs changes with each listen, and currently we are feeding our ears with am “Rolling Like A Stone”, “Her Come the Butterflies”, and the acoustic strummer “Mighty Shield”. The record got picked up for national distribution and is out on Superphonic Records (which is a new label with as we understand it a few good records coming out this year), so you can pick up a copy most anywhere or download it on itunes. There are a few mp3s on www.15megsoffame.com, and you can keep up with Greg at www.gregsummerlin.com
