The Great Depression: Unconscious Pilot
![]()
Todd Casper and Thomas Cranley met at University in Madison, Wisconsin in 1992. They shared a similar nocturnal nature, heightened sense of adventure and disdain for the corporate christian war machine. Over the years they careened across the country multiple times and eventually beyond its borders to Spain, Czech Republic, Denmark and Scotland in search of kicks, the muse, the perfect "Zeit-Heist". They stopped in a series of smoky recording studios along the way(with a cast of like minded artists and engineers) and stayed for days, weeks, months on end in order to practice their unique brand of sonic alchemy. They enjoy international critical acclaim and their music has been called "hauntingly beautiful," "fitfully gorgeous," "a quieter my bloody valentine" and "better than Radiohead,"
The title of this release, Unconscious Pilot, refers to the process by which it was conceived. The Great Depression spent extensive amounts of 2001 and 2002 in a beautifully remote studio, senses thus both deprived and enhanced. The hope was to achieve a prolonged, collective, receptive environment; a somehow dreamlike state within which they could divine, savor, filter information and capture it on tape. The lyrics and melodies found on Unconscious Pilot are the result of that experiment. |
